What If Christ Had Not Come?
Why do we present this familiar Pageant every December? Why do we tell stories about shepherds? Why do we mention stars and wise men? Why have Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh become important offerings? Why do we describe donkeys, stables and mangers? Why is it important to remember the birth of one particular baby that happened so long ago? In short, Why do we celebrate Christmas at all?
Well, the world seems to need this season? Traditions of Christmas are carried out in almost every country of the world. The “Peace on Earth and Goodwill” it brings are enjoyed by many diverse cultures.
It’s a wonderful time of year. Gifts are exchanged, Decorations are enjoyed; great food, joyful music, visits and fellowship make each day special.
But, what if Christ had not come?
There is a story in which a minister dreamed that in homes, there were no stockings by the chimneys, no wreaths on the doors and no decorated trees.
On the streets there were no bells ringing. There were no manger scenes. There were no stained glass windows. There were no church spires.
In the library, over half of the books had disappeared. In the museums, most of the art was missing. There were no hymns or praise choruses or Handel’s Messiah. The Bible ended at Malachi. There was no Gospel; no John 3:16; no promise of hope; no Lord’s Prayer, no Beatitudes and no love chapter.
At funerals there were no messages of resurrection.
In a panic, the minister woke up and his despair was greatly relieved when he heard carolers singing, “Joy to the World.”
Let’s not take this season for granted. Let’s not turn this Holy time into a frenzy of buying and selling. Instead, let us be glad and rejoice today because, “Christ has come.” He has brought all the assurances and blessings and teachings of his life and ministry. He has offered salvation to every person on earth. Let us remember the annunciation of the angel, “Behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people; for unto you is born this day in the city of David, a Savior, which is Christ the Lord” (Luke 2:10-11).
