The kind of God we worship determines the kind of people we will be. No one can be better than their God. Groups that imagine a violent, vengeful deity become violent and vengeful. Groups that imagine a compassionate, forgiving deity become compassionate and forgiving. It’s as simple as that!
We see this illustrated every day around the world. Ninety percent of all terrorism, cruelty and slaughter has to do with religion. Many say, “We love God so much, we’ll kill anyone who doesn’t.” That’s the height of arrogance. Jesus spent his life trying to correct people’s concept of God. He said, “Love your enemies. Pray for those who hurt you. If you do this, then you will be true sons of your Father in heaven. Your Father causes the sun to rise on good people and on bad people” (Matt. 5:44-45).
He emphasized acceptance and tolerance, saying, “Love your enemies. Do good to them . . . You will be son of the most high God . . . because God is kind even to people who are ungrateful and full of sin. Show mercy just as your father shows mercy” (Luke 6:35-36).
The point is this: We become like our object of worship. That’s why it’s so important to have a valid, positive concept of God.
Furthermore, Jesus constantly compares God to human parents, saying, “What would you do if your son asks for bread? Which of you would give him a stone? . . . Even though you are (imperfect), you know how to give good gifts to your children. So surely your heavenly Father will give good gifts . . .” (Matt 7:9-11).
A religious periodical editor recently expressed standard evangelical doctrine when he said, “Man’s slightest sin is an infinite offense to God and spiritually separates man from Him and makes man God’s enemy, deserving His wrath and eternal punishment.”
Now, one slight offense of a child would not make that boy or girl the “enemy” of their earthly father. It would not make that boy or girl “deserve” eternal punishment. Therefore, such a teaching is illogical, unbiblical and dangerous. We must repudiate such beliefs and instead have faith in the God Who is the Father of Jesus Christ. Jesus said, “He who has seen me has seen the father” (John 14:9). Therefore, if Jesus wouldn’t think, speak or act in a certain way; then God doesn’t either! Jesus came to reveal the true God, and that’s the one we must worship.
