WHAT IS THE GOSPEL?

Most people say the “Gospel” is “the death, burial and resurrection of Jesus.”  But there must be more to it than that.  However, if this is all there is to the “Gospel” then Jesus never preached the “Gospel.”

In the “Great Commission,” Jesus commanded us: “Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:  Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world” (Matt.  28:19-20).

In this Scripture, Jesus says, “As you go teach all nations . . ."  In other words, we have an obligation to present our faith wherever we are.

Then it says, "Baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit."  This Baptism is not a one time occurrence.  The gerund form of the word in English means, "continually baptize."  Also, the baptizing is not a reference to the ritual of Baptism observed in Christian churches, which is what we usually mean when we Baptize converts.  This means that we are to continually submerge people in the teachings of God and Christ.

This is similar to what Moses meant when he said, “Talk about (the commandments) when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.  Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.  Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates”  (Deut.  6:7-9, kjv).

"In the name of" means “what a person stands for.”  So we are to continually teach them the principles of Christ.  We've forgotten this part of the Gospel.

Jesus pinpoints what he wants us to teach when he says, "Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you."

Jesus said, “Why call ye me, Lord, Lord, and do not the things which I say?   Whosoever . . . heareth my sayings, and doeth them . . . is like a man which built an house, and digged deep, and laid the foundation on a rock: and when the flood arose, the stream beat vehemently upon that house, and could not shake it: for it was founded upon a rock” (Luke 6:46-48, kjv)
