THE OLD TIME RELIGION

Old fashioned evangelistic religious services tapped into deep human emotions.  They served many purposes:   Hell-Fire sermons created fears with their adrenaline rushes, like horror movies do today.  Vilifying Satan and “sinners” gave people a legitimate dumping ground for their angers and resentments.  Pitting “us” against “them” gave members a sense of security and belonging.  They felt smug about salvation–“We’re okay!  They’re not!”

Further, going to church assuaged the conscience of those conditioned to traditional obligations.  It was a socially acceptable custom, as well as a source of entertainment.  What a bargain!  It even provided “Brownie Points” for doing a good deed.

Church attendance no longer has all of the “pay-offs.”  Many other organizations and activities fill these needs.  Times have changed.  We’ll never be able to re-create the “Old Time Religion.”

But Jesus’ Gospel is always new and relevant.  We must keep the “truth” and adapt the presentation to changing times.  Paul said, “With all kinds of people I have become all kinds of things, so that in all kinds of circumstances I might save at least some of them”

(1 Cor.  9:22, CJB).
